Mixed grill

It’s taken me a while to get this post up. The good news is that the reason for that it because I wanted to be sure the post was worthy of the restaurant and not just a quick slap-up of a photo and a phone number.

The Turkish restaurant is one of our favorites in Dakar. Really good food, good prices, friendly owners and staff and yeah, really good food.

Fatayas

My favorite thing to order is the mixed grill plate (Karisik Izgara). Chicken, sausage and beef kebabs with fries, salad and a little rice. It’s one of the few places I’ve been where the mixed grill didn’t have any filler meats – all are a really delicious. And if you’re feeling a little meat-deprived in Dakar, this is a great 6500cfa option.

The Turkish pizza (pidé) are also delicious either as a meal or shared as an appetizer. My favorite is the Karisik Pidé.

If you go with a group, you can request a shared mixed grill based on 500g of meat per person. Yum.

Fatouche salad

Also on the menu is tabboulet, kofte, kebabs, manëche, ‘regular’ pizzas and the usual hamburgers, filet de thiof, etc.. Top it all off with a café turque! (Or a hookah. You’re choice.)

Upper level dining area

It’s a bit tricky to find simply because it’s not well marked. But if you take route de Ouakam heading from Ouakam toward the university, the Turkish restaurant will be on your right just across from the blue Dem Dikk bus parking lot. If you get to the roundpoint at Stèle Mermoz (Césars), you’ve gone too far.

Fresh seafood, delivered to your door

Have you met Abdou? Some of you have, and others of you would probably like to! Abdou will take your order for seafood, go to the market early in the morning, buy whatever you’ve requested and ice it down, then deliver it to your door at whatever time suits you.

I’ve been buying from Abdou for over a year now and am always impressed with the freshness of the seafood and how punctual he is for deliveries. And his prices are quite good, too.

Beautiful lotte fillets are between 3,000-3,500cfa/kilo.
Whole shrimp is 2,500cfa/kilo.
Barracuda fillets are 6,000cfa/kilo.
He can also get gambas, lobster or any other local seafood you’d like.

Abdou is a very motivated seller who wants your business. So he may call you up to ask if you are ready to order again rather than waiting for you to contact him. But hey, for prompt deliveries, fresh seafood and good prices… It’s worth it.

Ngalakh cookies

Hmm...

What to do with a bottle of ngalakh (also ngalax) after a Senegalese holiday? Make peanut butter cookies! Thanks for the recipe, Valerie!

1/2 cup butter
1/2 cup brown sugar (or white sugar + 1TBSP molasses or 1/2 tsp maple flavoring)
2 eggs
2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
2 cups thick ngalakh
about 1 1/2 cups flour (depends on ngalakh consistency)

Cream butter and sugar, beat in eggs until smooth. Mix dry ingredients together, and add gradually, incorporating to the mixture on low. Add flour if needed.

Sppon dough onto baking sheets and flatten slightly.

Bake in preheated oven at 350° until lightly browned, about 8-10 min. Remove and cool on wire racks.

The couscous in the ngalakh give them a nice crunch!

Senegalese Ngalakh is…
2 cups steamed karaw (millet couscous)
2 tablespoons butter
4 cups of baobab fruit, soaked then strained leaving only juice

Baobab fruit

1-2 cups peanut butter (smooth, natural, unsweetened)
2 cups of sugar
1 teaspoon orange-flower water
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
pinch of nutmeg
one handful of raisins
water

Basically what you’ve got is peanut butter, sugar, couscous, tropical fruit juice that looks like white sludge and a bunch of yummy flavorings. Once it’s all prepared and mixed together, you pour it up into bottles and chill it.

Custom table-top herb gardens

I don’t even have a pale green thumb. It’s pretty much just brown. But maintaining an herb garden that someone else plants, that I can do.

We recently bought four table-top herb gardens and are very happy with the resulting basil, cilantro, parsley, green onions, mint and coming-soon-tomatoes. So I thought I’d pass on the info to Dakar Eats readers.

Each table costs 6,000cfa and includes the actual table (about 2 feet tall), the soil mix and your choice of herbs and/or available garden plants. There are at least 20 herbs and plants to choose from. We asked for tomatoes (not on the list) and he made it work. He also gave me big bags of freshly snipped herbs to use while waiting for our new plants to take root and really start producing.

In addition to the 6,000cfa per table, Tall recommends buying a year’s worth of fertilizers (macro/micro). All in all, for the four tables installed at our house with plants (not just seedlings) and the fertilizers was 28,000cfa.

If you decide you want to change out your plants for something new, just call and he’ll make it happen.

American cereals, under 2,000cfa!

We were in Mbour yesterday and found a selection of American cereals for 1,800-2,000cfa/box. And for the record:

- They are not expired.
- They are full-sized boxes.
- They are fresh and really good!

The brand name is Millville and they are packaged in Illinois for Aldi.

Has anyone seen these in Dakar! If so, encourage the store managers to keep ‘em coming!

Peas (and other stuff), please!

This is a first for me. Fresh peas in Dakar! And shelled at 1,500cfa/kilo, way too good to pass up. Sold by the vendors in front of Parcours / Chez Hoballah / The French Fry store on the Corniche. (If you go into Parcours, they have Skittles, M&Ms, Starburst and Kit Kats. You know, to balance out those healthy peas.)

Also in season: cherry tomatoes, roma tomatoes, strawberries, sweet corn, Malian mangoes, avocados and green beans. Charentais melons are on their way out.

Anyone seen fresh peas elsewhere in Dakar?
