“So what’s in season?” I asked the woman I buy produce from. Her answer? “Everything!”
I love that answer. Today I bought lettuce, beets, carrots, potatoes, onions, winter squash, cucumbers, tomatoes, zucchini, snapped green beans, mint, cilantro, apples, bananas, melon, limes and… sweet corn. Yes, everything is in season, it seems.
Last year I posted about the arrival of sweet corn, but some people had a hard time finding it. Here’s a tip for finding it:
- It’s often stored under a burlap sack to keep it fresh. So don’t just look for it – ask for it. ”Maïs” or more precisely, “maïs doux” is what you want.
- Sometimes you’ll find men selling it from large woven bags, like the 50-kilo rice bags. So look not just your regular produce vendors, but on the street as well.
Sweet corn sells for about 100cfa an ear, which is a fantastic price.
And the season is usually a couple months, so enjoy, enjoy, enjoy!

Yeah, sweet corn is here! Thanks for letting us all know!
